Is My Baby Getting Enough Milk? Key Signs and Reassurance for Breastfeeding Moms

One of the most common concerns breastfeeding moms face is wondering, “Is my baby getting enough milk?” It’s a question I hear from nearly every parent I work with, and as a lactation counselor (and mom of two!), I completely understand. The uncertainty can feel overwhelming, especially when breastfeeding already comes with its own set of challenges.

But here’s the good news: there are clear signs to help you know whether your baby is feeding well and getting what they need. Let’s dive into two key indicators, and I’ll share where you can find even more in my free breastfeeding guide.

Key Signs Your Baby Is Getting Enough Milk

1. Wet and Dirty Diapers

In the first few days after birth, your baby should have at least 1–2 wet diapers and pass meconium stools (dark, tarry poop). By day 5, this increases to at least 6 wet diapers and 3–4 yellow, seedy stools per day. Diapers are one of the easiest and most reliable ways to track how much milk your baby is getting.

2. Baby’s Behavior During and After Feeds

A baby who is feeding well will show rhythmic sucking, a soft “k” sound indicating swallowing, and will appear satisfied, relaxed, or even fall asleep after feeding.

These two signs are a great starting point, but there’s so much more to understanding your breastfeeding journey!

When to Seek Support

While these signs can help you feel more confident, every baby (and every breastfeeding journey) is unique. If you notice any of the following, it’s a good idea to reach out to a lactation counselor or healthcare provider:

• Your baby has fewer wet or dirty diapers than expected.

• Your baby hasn’t regained their birth weight by 2 weeks.

• Breastfeeding is consistently painful despite trying to adjust your latch.

How to Build Your Breastfeeding Confidence

It’s easy to doubt yourself, especially when breastfeeding doesn’t always look the way you expected. Remember, breastfeeding is a learned skill—for both you and your baby. Seeking support and equipping yourself with knowledge can make a huge difference.
